In the Summer of 2005, LSSU students and faculty participated in a biotic and chemical assessment of the St. Marys River, the river connecting two of the largest bodies of fresh water on the planet, Lake Superior and Lake Huron. This work was aimed at providing baseline data on this important waterway in the form of biotic and chemical indices so that comparisons could be made to assess the rivers's "health" in the future. While there were several concerns raised by the study, it was found that the St. Marys river is generally improving with respect to previous studies. The data from this study has been used to help delist the St. Marys River as a USEPA Area of Concern (AOC).
